D.I.Y.: All-natural Foundation with 4 ingredients!

I love makeup, but getting the good stuff is expensive. I love mineral powder because of the airbrush finish and lightweight feel, but my preferred brand costs me $15 for just a few ounces. I call BS.

I've been researching DIY makeup, which sounds like a cardinal fashion sin, but is actually the greatest thing ever. Not ever, in the history of ever, but still pretty great.

Using stuff you already have, you can make up your own makeup (did you catch that?) in less than 5 minutes, and that's only if you're more of a tortoise and less of a hare. Not only is it fast, easy, cheap, and natural--it even smells great, with ingredients like cocoa powder, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Here's how!

You'll need:

Corn starch or arrowroot powder
Cocoa powder (unsweetened)
Ground nutmeg
Ground cinnamon
Unscented lotion, petroleum jelly, coconut oil, or liquid medium of your choice (optional)
Empty, clean spice jar or other container

Then:

Add 2 teaspoons of cornstarch to a small bowl as the base for your foundation. Then, mix in about a tablespoon of cocoa powder (less if you're fair-skinned), and a teaspoon each of nutmeg and cinnamon.

When you've got the desired shade, put it in your spice jar, shake it up before each use, and tell everyone you know about how crafty you are!

How does it work?

Cornstarch absorbs moisture and binds the other ingredients into a powder.
Nutmeg adds a bronzing, sun-kissed effect.
Cinnamon adds warmth to the color.
Cocoa deepens the shade.

To customize it:

Use more or less of each darkening and bronzing ingredient until you get the correct shade for your skin tone. If you mixed it too dark, just add more cornstarch.

If you want to tweak the recipe to create a bronzer, just add more nutmeg and cinnamon (and cocoa powder if needed).

If you like liquid foundation or bronzer, just mix your powder into unscented lotion, petroleum jelly, or coconut oil. Make sure you don't mix it into too much liquid--you will lose color concentration and end up with a weak foundation.
